About Ivo and Shawn
An overall combined 45+ years of clinical / medical experience, teaching, and lecturing experience heavily weighted in biomechanics, neurology, orthopedics, manual medicine, acupuncture, advanced gait and running knowledge. Dr. Ivo Waerlop (summitchiroandrehab.com) and Dr. Shawn Allen (doctorallen.co & shawnallen.net) are finally bringing what has long been needed to the information/web age, enough knowledge and experience to help clarify the truths and dispel the myths that are abundant on the internet and in seminar halls. The blog has been active and live since early 2011 with over 1500 article entries. They are now using this site you are on as their primary blog, but if you have already become comfortable with the Tumblr Blog (thegaitguys.tumblr.com) then keep using it, just know you might miss out on a few things. Shawn and Ivo will try to keep the Tumblr Blog as current as this blog on this site here. Their weekly podcast is heard in over 90 countries and is used as a teaching tool along side the blog in many professional educational schools and venues. They are both postdoctoral instructors with the University of Bridgeport Health Sciences Postgraduate Education Department and postgraduate instructors with OnlineContinuingEd, LLC. Through this onlineCE.com website venue they do a large portion of their teaching and have a catalogued library of courses anyone can take from that website. Their opinions and knowledge are highly sought after by many shoe, gait analysis and human performance companies around the world.
Dr. Waerlop and Dr. Allen have consulted for major corporations and institutions like Vibram USA on the Five Fingers Shoe and numerous smaller companies to help educate them on various topics encompassing gait, running, shoes, foot, orthopedic and neurologic issues, biomechanics and human movement as they relate to a company's bottom line, to R&D assistance, product review, product placement and sales.
They are proud to keep their views and opinions on various products truthful, research based and unbiased for the sake of searching for the facts, uncovering the truth and dispelling myths put upon consumers.

Dr Ivo is a 1986 summa cum laude graduate of the New York Chiropractic College. He received his post-graduate neurology diplomate from Logan Chiropractic College; he became board certified in 1990. Dr Ivo works with a broad base of patients including Olympic level, professional and paraprofessional running, skiing and cycling athletes. He is an adjunct faculty member with the Lincoln School of Post-Professional Education. He is engaged in publishing active research on cycling biomechanics and is involved in gait and lower extremity research. He is a board certified Chiropractic Neurologist, Chiropractic Rehabilitation Physician and certified Chiropractic Sports Physician. He lectures nationally on foot-ankle and gait biomechanics in sports and now in advanced acupuncture techniques. He is co-author of the textbook, Pedographs and Gait Analysis: Clinical Applications and Pearls.
Additional Background
Dr Ivo F Waerlop attended SUNY at Albany for his undergraduate work and graduated from the New York Chiropractic College in 1986. He then joined the Core Science faculty at the college and taught anatomy and cadaver dissection as well as Gonstead and Diversified chiropractic techniques. It was at this time he conducted research performing a serial dissection of alar ligaments in cadavers and completed post graduate work in Sports Medicine, receiving his Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician certification.
Dr Ivo then moved to Gloucester, Massachusetts where he founded Gloucester Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, a medically referral based office complete with CYBEX lab. During his time in Massachusetts, he completed additional post graduate work in rehabilitation and was accepted into the chiropractic neurology program at Logan Chiropractic College in St Louis, Missouri. Here, he was one of the fortunate doctors who studied directly under Dr Ted Carrick, and after 3 years and passing his written and oral board examinations, was awarded his Diplomate in Neurology Degree in May of 1991. At this point in time, Dr Waerlop began his post graduate teaching career, 1st in rehabilitation and later in neurology, lecturing throughout the US and Canada.
In late 1996, Dr Ivo relocated to Summit County Colorado, continuing to teach on a post graduate level and began a private practice in Frisco at the CARE Health Group. He began teaching Anatomy and Physiology locally at the Colorado Mountain College, which he continues to do today. In 1999, he relocated to a larger facility in Silverthorne and founded Summit Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, PC, a rehabilitation and neurology referral based practice, with an emphasis on gait and movement analysis.
In 2004, he became interested in acupuncture, largely because his 150 pound German Shepherd (Atlas) was epileptic, and a Veterinary Acupuncturist from Grand Junction (Dr Shalona McFarland) was able to help him control his seizures. Dr Ivo began his studies shortly thereafter and received his acupuncture license in the summer of 2005. He then studied neuromuscular acupuncture under Dr Yun Tao Ma and currently lecture with and is writing an acupuncture book with him.
In August of 2006, Dr John Asthlater joined the practice and the office was moved to our new facility in the Dillon Tech Center, in Dillon. In addition to injury, rehabilitative and preventative care, the new center offers the latest in cutting edge video motion analysis, an orthotic lab, electrodiagnostics, blood glucose and lipid analysis, lactate testing, training programs, expanded hours and many other services.
When Dr Ivo isn’t seeing patients or lectruring, he enjoys spending time tele skiing, hiking and 4 wheeling with his wife, local photographer Lisa Ortiz, Their sons Vander and Saxx and their dog, Pons. His hobbies include reading, music and cooking.

I am a Diplomate of American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists. I am a 1995 graduate of the National University of Health Sciences and prior to that graduated with my first bachelor of science degree from the University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada) in kinesiology. My second degree was achieved in Human Biology while continuing my chiropractic studies. In addition to my "more regular" clientele base, I also work with a broad base of patients including Olympic, professional, para-professional, collegiate and All-American athletes including sprinters, distance runners, swimmers, marathoners, Ultramarathoners, gymnasts, dancers (ballet, modern, Irish and ballroom), mixed martial artists, football, wrestling, baseball and Olympic distance, Sprint and IRONMAN tri-athletes.
I am a board certified Chiropractic Orthopedist; achieved through a three (3) year in-house resident trained program in chiropractic orthopedics through the National University of Health Sciences with additional extensive training in functional neurology. I am currently enrolled and studying in a Post-doctoral functional neurology program through the Carrick Institute. In the recent past I have been an adjunct faculty member with the Lincoln School of Post-Professional Education and an instructor in advanced orthopedics and functional biomechanics at National University in Lombard, Illinois. I now focuses my teaching towards web-based live teleseminars so that I can reach a broader international audience. I embrace the future of teaching. via the internet, where anyone around the world can tap into educational resources. Embracing this forum, in July 2009 I signed on as online internet educational professor on the website www.onlineCE.com with my teaching colleague Dr. Ivo Waerlop. I am an occasional lecturer/speaker for many fitness, coaching and healthcare companies and associations. I am a former chiropractor for the Chicago Joffrey Ballet professional dance company, former physician for Newman/Haas Indy Car Race team (the late actor Paul Newman) and on occasion the Team Physician and consultant for private athletic teams and individuals. I work seasonally with numerous high schools and colleges treating their athletes who complete in various sports.
Combining a broad spectrum of past sport experience, and in the most recent decade, working with athletes and professional artists of all levels and many disciplines has enriched my knowledge and understanding of the body and its function and malfunction. To best treat an athlete, one must know their sport intimately. Knowing what the sport and its demands "feel like" helps to treat its classic injuries. To this end, in recent years I have undertaken the active study of what I considers some of the most difficult motor skills and athletic endeavors. In 2009 I began what would turn into 3 years of understudy in ballroom dance (Intermediate Bronze in 9 smooth and latin dances) under gifted Nationally recognized instructors. From this I learned what I had hoped, the complexities, coordination and strength necessary in the lower limbs to perform the often under-appreciated complexity of professional dance as well as the art of silent body communication. I have also embraced the study of formal authentic pilates and more recently several years of understudy in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under a lineage of the famous Gracie family. Through these undertakings I have achieved an even higher appreciation and insight into the complexities of human movement, biomechanics and the subsequent physical problems that arise from body asymmetry through these mediums.
I live in the suburbs of Illinois and enjoy writing, music, podcasts, documentaries, painting, Brazilian jiu jitsu, gardening and reading. My writing and artist site can be found at www.shawnallen.net (there is a tab link above). I am an information junkie of sorts.

In 2006 I completed several courses, training in PRRT (Primal ReflexRelease technique, www.theprrt.com) a growing technique for reducing reflex trauma-based pain, INMAS (Integrated Neuromuscular Acupoint System) a newer method of incorporating the principles of pain management acupuncture with Western medicine pain managment methods under the study of world respected Dr. Yun Tal Ma , and a 10 month internship course in MAT training (Muscle Activation Techniques. To be clear, although he completed all required course work, I chose not to "test out" from the course in MAT, thus I am not officially certified or recognized by the MAT organization and many not be found on their website. I insist on being clear about this unofficial certification status with the MAT organization so as to not misrepresent myself in the community. My goal was to learn the information so as to assimilate it into my own techniques and methods to evolve his own methods that best suits my patient and client needs.
I have also attended course work under Dr. Pavel Kolar and PRof Janda from Prague, Czech. Dr. Kolar was taught by Professor Karel Lewit and the late Professors Vaclav Vojte and Vladimir Janda, the brilliant European grandfathers of manual medicine.
